Karen Patterson Brunke - Acrylic Painting

My drawings and paintings are personal investigations into the underlying systems of geometric and organic patterns along with plants, fish, and animals. Whether it is the branching lines of a tree, the veining in marble, an aerial view of a river, capillaries in a magnified photo, or man-made geometric patterns, I am fascinated with patterns and am constantly exploring new ways to use them in my art. In my recent works, I have had fun using collage and mixed media to add 3-D textural elements to my paintings.

Explorations into biology, quantum physics, chemistry, chaos, and fractals have informed my works. Also Japanese and Chinese nature paintings, Italian Pre-Renaissance painting, Islamic patterns, and Egyptian art have all influenced me over the years.

I see my work as a combination of seemingly unconnected images that become personally connected like a visual poem. Some paintings may be just like a haiku, a statement to simply notice something I thought was beautiful. I make these artworks to reflect a combination of the things I have observed around me and my feelings about them.
